Mining
Mining
Mining is one of the two basic production areas that meet the raw material needs of societies along with agriculture. The sector is of twofold importance due to its direct contribution to the economy and the inputs it provides to the manufacturing sector. Mining, which has the highest added value and employment creation capacity among sectors, prevents migration to the city and accelerates regional development, since it is mostly carried out in rural areas. Turkey, as a result of complex geology and tectonic has a wide variety of mineral resources. However, this complex geology and tectonics is also one reason why the mineral deposits are small in size and very fragmented. Despite being one of the world’s richest countries in terms of diversity, with total reserves when needed both directions and one single bed size were compared, it is seen that Turkey’s mining potential is very high, except for some metals. Today, only 13 of the 90 types of mines traded in the world are not available in our country. Our country is rich or very rich in terms of the remaining 50 types of minerals, and has insufficient resources in terms of 27 types of minerals. The share of mining in the Gross National Product (GNP) has been between 1.1% and 1.5% in the last 10 years. Stones covers 43% of Turkey’s total mineral exports. After natural stones, chrome, copper, zinc ores, natural borates and concentrates are among the other product groups where mineral exports are concentrated. More important metals in Turkey thorium, lignite, marble, magnesite, trona, and feldspar and sodium sulfate. Despite the rich mineral reserves, imports continue predominantly in the sector.
